At Marlowe Fire & Security, we believe in the power of communication and engagement. Yesterday, we transformed our Innovation Suite into a mini cinema, setting the stage for an internal communications event to showcase our commitment to both our close-knit family of employees and our strategy and vision. 🌟

🍿 Our office teams were treated to a special movie screening featuring our dynamic CEO, Rob Flinn. With popcorn, cookies and crisps in hand, we turned the screening into a full-blown cinema experience.

Rob shared his inspiring insights on how he’s led the transformation of Marlowe’s fire and security businesses, achieving remarkable growth and spearheading industry trends. It was an opportunity for Rob to connect with us all and for us to walk away feeling inspired and informed – and bought into the strong shared purpose that drives and unites us all.

What are your main responsibilities?

My main responsibilities involve developing and growing brand awareness for Marlowe Fire & Security in the Scotland region.

What is your main objective within this role?

My main objective is to build relationships and target electrical contractors, consultants, architects, specifiers, and end-users in order to develop long-term business client relationships as a one-stop-shop supplier.

What jobs did you do prior to joining us? What prepared you for your role here?

Before joining Marlowe Fire & Security, I spent 22 years in the industry working for global organisations. Prior to this role, I had the responsibility of managing all aspects of the largest UK framework for 32 local councils, Scotland Excel. This involved tasks such as administration, invoicing, fire and security project design for new builds, and maintaining a large legacy portfolio of multiple product suppliers. I also managed end-of-life upgrades for compliance, meeting end-user needs and requirements, and held monthly meetings with chief executives and senior management.

What’s the best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security?

The best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security is that with the combination of the Marlowe family’s acquisitions of various companies, we are truly a one-stop-shop supplier. In addition to fire and security services, we offer M&E, sprinklers and suppression, fire doors, full fire stopping passive and compartmentation, fire risk assessment, and many other group services to both new and existing clients.

What has been the highlight of your career at Marlowe Fire & Security over the years?

As I have recently joined, the highlight of my career at Marlowe Fire & Security so far has been helping to retain a very large account under the Marlowe family without any on-site support in Scotland. I primarily set up a structured supplier network and worked with marketing to develop and grow brand awareness for Marlowe Fire & Security in Scotland, resulting in increased lead generation.

Are you working on any special projects that would be interesting for this interview?

Currently, I assist on many projects, such as Scottish Power and Firstport, and actively develop new accounts while retaining existing ones. I also lend a helping hand to my colleagues whenever they need assistance.

What has been your greatest personal achievement?

My greatest personal achievement has been nurturing and developing our children and grandchildren to believe that nothing is impossible through hard work and always striving to be the best they can be.

What makes you most proud of your team/company?

I am most proud of the constant development and growth of our team/company. We continuously strive to become bigger and better, offering solutions that surpass client demands and expectations within our new and existing client portfolio.

Where were you born/where did you grow up?

I was born and bred in Glasgow.

Fun facts: 3 fun facts about you?

I am a father, grandfather, dog owner, golfer, and an avid worldwide sports fan.

    Do you have any pets?

Yes, I have a Boxer dog named Tyson.

Do you have any hidden talents/party pieces?

I am reliable, trustworthy, and the go-to person in times of need

What’s your favorite place in the world and why?

My favorite place in the world is Reunion in Florida, USA. It is a gated community with many superb amenities, including beautiful properties and three world-class golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Watson. It offers complete tranquility and relaxation, while also being very close to all the world-class theme parks, exceptional shopping, and dining options.

    What’s on your bucket list?

Traveling and hopefully growing old to enjoy seeing my family grow.

Who are your fantasy dinner party guests – dead or alive?

My fantasy dinner party guests would be my deceased mother and father, Billy Connolly, Robin Williams, Leonardo Da Vinci, Nikola Tesla, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Andrea Bocelli, and James Taylor.

What are the best things in life?

The best things in life are continually breathing and being healthy, spending time with my wife, children, grandchildren, and our dog Tyson.

If you’re considering joining us, there’s never been a better time to get in touch.

Being part of a wider group (Marlowe Fire & Security Group) has given us the privilege of acquiring and where appropriate integrating other businesses that we feel sit well within our portfolio. Whilst it’s always exciting for us, we also understand that integration can be a time of great change – for everyone involved, including customers, office and operational Team members.

Having been through this process many times now, we have a fine-tuned integration process led by an experienced team who work hard to ensure everyone is kept informed and supported, but today we’re hearing from an Engineer who’s been through the process recently to get his perspective on it all.

So, let’s meet John Greig, a Lead Engineer here, who has been through this process before.

5 minutes with… John Greig, Lead Engineer at Marlowe Fire & Security

What is your job title and role?

I’m a Lead Engineer for the minor works department, looking after Wales, West Midlands, East Midlands and East Anglia, managing seven Engineers.

What is minor works you may ask?
Well, it’s a department that carries out small installations or additions to commercial, residential or domestic properties.

      What are your main responsibilities?

As Lead Engineer my role is multi-faceted. I’m responsible for ensuring that the Engineers remain up to speed with training, regulations and policies as they are ever changing! I also work closely with the scheduling team to ensure that parts are delivered ahead of time and that the Engineers diaries are used as efficiently as possible.

I am also the first port of call for any issues or challenges that may arise from either Engineers or our customers and for any technical reviews on quotations. This means I’m often jumping on the laptop to assess critical, urgent or standard technical reviews so we can quote for new jobs accurately. This means we get it right first time, everyone’s clear about the pricing and time allocated to install jobs and the customer is happy as they have clear expectations with minimum disruption on the project.

Whilst I’m still quite new to the role I’ve been an Engineer with Marlowe Fire and Security for 2 years so have fostered many good relationships along the way. I have over 15 years’ experience in the industry so I do what I can to pass my knowledge and experience to DRS, Account Managers and Engineers.

What is your main objective within this role?

My most important objective is to ensure that all our customers receive great service delivery. If there are incidences when that hasn’t happened, I try to establish the reasons why and work on changing practices to ensure it doesn’t happen again. I also support the Engineers with their professional development to ensure that they become multi-disciplined, therefore enabling wider products and services to be delivered to a high standard.

By working so closely with the Scheduling Team, it allows me to ensure that the Engineers’ workload is managed effectively and their parts are delivered in advance to minimise delays.

What jobs did you do prior to joining us? What prepared you for your role here?

My background is in projects and installation. In the past I have previously managed my own projects and installations. This included distribution of materials, resource and organisation skills to make sure all projects were completed on time or ahead of schedule. As my confidence and knowledge has developed over time, it’s allowed me to use those skills to manage other Engineers and promote new working practices within the teams I have worked in.

What’s the best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security?

Being part of a bigger team that all works towards the same goals and values. It has also been great to see the minor works department thrive and grow as it has and to be a part of that. I have been able to share my thoughts and opinions on changes to working practices which have always been respectfully considered, which has given me the confidence to develop my skills and knowledge over time.

What has been the highlight of your career at Marlowe Fire & Security over the years?

Around a year ago I was fortunate enough to be invited to install the intruder alarm in the home of the publisher who originally published the works of J.R.R Tolkien (Lord of the Rings creator). This was an experience I will never forget!
I’ve also been very committed to expanding and maintaining the minor works department into the team it is today, by being flexible and driven to move it forward.

Tell us about the integration of FSE into MFS?

I can clearly remember the initial meeting where the FSE team was gathered together and told we were being acquired by Marlowe. Naturally, there were some initial reservations about this but within the early months I saw the potential that laid ahead and the resources that Marlowe Fire & Security could provide to Engineers, as well as customers. Firstly the Marlowe Academy, which is the in-house training facility for Engineers and other operational staff. Secondly, the volume of Engineers around the country that could provide a quick and concise call-out ability and reduce the area of coverage for individuals.

Did you feel supported during the integration?

I felt that we were well supported and always kept abreast of future changes which were on the horizon. This made it a very seamless transition.

Tell us how your role changed post integration. What were you doing before vs. what you are doing now?

I was an installation/project Engineer dealing with any medium to large installs in the East Anglia and London regions. I also supported the service side as and when needed. My role changed from having to cover a vast area of the country to now being able to work closer to home. My work/life balance has vastly improved, and I have more time to enjoy my hobbies. My working role has changed as this is no longer staying away for extended periods of time. Before the integration, it was not unusual for me to be staying away from home for months at a time. Since integration has happened, I am usually only away for a few days at a time.

Are you working on any special projects that would be interesting to this interview?

Marlowe Fire & Security recently won the contract for a national hotel chain. I saw this as an opportunity to expand my skill set, so I managed to learn the installation of a highly specialised system (with a little help from a few system veterans – Karl Rudge, Connor Evans and Dan Gabblins) and am now responsible for overseeing minor work delivery on this contract.

What has been your greatest personal achievement?

This may come as a shock to some people, but I have a real fear of flying and heights which is still the case to this day. Around 6 years ago I went on holiday to France where I completed a bungee jump from the tallest structure in Europe!

What makes you most proud of your team/company?

On a daily basis I get to witness Engineers of differing lengths of service and experience, work together to achieve great end results. I am proud of the way all of the different departments work together to ensure that customers receive the best service.

Where were you born/where did you grow up?

Born in Scotland and have been in England since I was young.

      Do you have any pets?

      3 dogs and a cat…. for now!

What’s your favourite place in the world and why?

Of all the places I have visited so far I would have to pick Durness in Scotland because of its beautiful scenery, the people and the history it holds.

      What’s on your bucket list?

      To explore Japan!

Who are your fantasy dinner party guests – dead or alive?

Sean Connery, Billy Connolly, The Two Ronnie’s and Angela Lansbury.

What are the best things in life?

      Food, family, health and happiness!

If you’re considering joining us as an Engineer, there’s never been a better time to get in touch.

In a field traditionally characterised by its male-dominated nature, Faye Goodwin shines as a standout Service Engineer at Marlowe Fire & Security. Demonstrating exceptional skill, unwavering dedication and extensive expertise, Faye breaks barriers and challenges stereotypes – not only through her work but her ‘Girls Who Fix’ Instagram account!

Today we delve into Faye’s remarkable journey, from her early days in the Army to her current role, and explore her passion for training, personal achievements and the close-knit team she works with.

With her infectious enthusiasm and commitment to upholding industry standards, Faye serves as an inspiration to aspiring engineers of all backgrounds. Join us as we uncover her story and gain valuable insights into the world of fire and security engineering.

      What are your main responsibilities?

As the Senior Service Engineer in my area, I distribute the month’s PPMs (this stands for Planned Preventative Maintenance) to the team, provide technical assistance and ensure we are achieving our SLAs and compliance targets, in addition to completing my everyday PPM works. I also often help out with the Minor Works team and look after large sites and specialist contracts in our region, such as the Prisons

What is your main objective within this role?

To provide excellent customer service! I ensure I’m completing all my work to the highest of standards and compliance. I pride myself on my integrity, thoroughness and knowledge ensuring all systems are inspected and tested to the current regulations and standards.

What jobs did you do prior to joining us? What prepared you for your role here?

I started life in the Army as a Systems Engineering Technician serving in the Royal Signals. As well as providing training in electrical/electronic systems, the forces gave me my work ethos that strongly defines me today. Having left the Army, I did a brief stint in Surveillance before stumbling into to the wonderful world of fire alarms! Before joining Marlowe, I was an Install and Commissioning Engineer across all disciplines for many years and still like to get stuck in showing Minor Works how it’s done! 😉

What’s the best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security?

Training! Being an absolute Fire and Security geek (follow me on Instagram at @girls_who_fix) the fact that Marlowe is committed so much to providing brilliant training was the main draw that brought me here. So many fire & security companies promise training and never deliver. If you’re thinking of joining us you won’t be disappointed! Marlowe Academy and Martec are something to be proud of!

What has been the highlight of your career at Marlowe Fire & Security over the years?

Finally getting my Gent licence recently. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I’ve joined the industry but never had the chance.

Are you working on any special projects?

I recently secured 18 service variations at a single prison site so looking forward to getting all their systems brought up to standards throughout July.

What has been your greatest personal achievement?

100% it has to be my son, Fox. We may not have slept for nearly 3 years but he’s worth every second. He is certainly an Engineer in the making too and loves nothing more than riding in my van, setting off the many fire alarms I have in my shed and stealing all my tools!

What makes you most proud of your team/company?

Whilst in my area we may be one of the smaller teams, we are like a little family. We stay in contact in and out of work and everyone is always happy to help each other out.

Where were you born/where did you grow up?

I was born and grew up in Middlesbrough.

      Do you have any pets?

Yes, 2 crazy spaniels called Binx and Bailey.

Fun facts: 3 fun facts about you?

      I have surfed Waikiki beach.
I have played football at Wembley.
      I have a 3-0 undefeated boxing record.

What’s your favourite place in the world and why?

The beach. Having grew up by the beach it’s the one thing I miss living in the Cotswolds.

What are the best things in life?

My wife and son, Protec 6500 panels and my tool collection!

If you’re considering joining us as an Engineer, there’s never been a better time to get in touch.

My focus is on understanding their needs and challenges so we can provide them with the highest level of protection and peace of mind and be part of their journey towards a safer and more secure future.

What is your main objective within this role?

What jobs did you do prior to joining us? What prepared you for your role here?

I started my career with a business now acquired by Marlowe Fire & Security over 33 years ago! From an electrical apprenticeship through to becoming an approved Electrician I then moved to several Engineering roles (Data Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Fire and Static Invertor Commissioning Engineer) before moving into the management side – starting as Service Manager. From there I progressed to Regional Service Manager and now I’m National Accounts Manager.

You really can progress your career in a workplace like Marlowe Fire & Security – you have the backing and the development path in place to support your ambitions.

What’s the best thing about working at Marlowe Fire & Security?

The team and being part of the development of the business and seeing the growth of our offering over the years to being one of the market leaders.

What has been the highlight of your career at Marlowe Fire & Security over the years?

It can sometimes take years of work to bring a large national account onboard – but when the hard work finally pays off and you can onboard their business and the team as customers it really is a fantastic feeling. I always look forward to the opportunity to work in their business with the team and make a difference.

Are you working on any special projects?

There are several large scale national infrastructure installation projects we’re working on for a leading utility provider and we’re also in the process of mobilising a new national student accommodation maintenance contract.

What has been your greatest personal achievement?

I’ve been doing and teaching martial arts for over 20 years and recently I’ve worked with children with additional needs, supporting some young people to the level of black belt! For one such individual it was such a special achievement when he achieved black belt as he’d previously been told he could never manage that. It goes to show that with the right support and determination you can achieve your goals.

A very close second is my family.

What makes you most proud of your team/company?

The fact we can all approach each other to share strengths and work through our challenges as one team.

Where were you born/where did you grow up?

      Hamilton in Scotland.

      Do you have any pets?

I have an 8 year old spoiled retriever dog called Gunna and an 11 year old cat called Ellwood (Ellwood is who I warn visitors about!).

Do you have any hidden talents/party pieces?

      Possibly…!

What’s your favourite place in the world and why?

Glencoe in Scotland. Everything is just clear there and you find yourself with the peace and quiet – and time – to think and reflect in surroundings that just can’t be beaten!

      What’s on your bucket list?

I’d love to visit New Zealand and Japan. Seeing the Northern Lights is also on there.

Who are your fantasy dinner party guests – dead or alive?

      Keith Moon and Richard Branson.

What are the best things in life?

      Family, health and happiness.

A specialist dedicated training and development centre for Fire & Security Engineers.

Did you know we have a dedicated training facility called Marlowe Academy?

With hundreds of nationwide Engineers working to deliver service excellence every day, our Engineers know in their line of work they have to get their job right. Every job they attend they need to have the right skills to make the right decisions to not only meet compliance but meet rigorous standards that we uphold.

The work they do ultimately safeguards people’s lives. They need the peace of mind that they’ve had the best training to prepare them for their role.

For our customers, they need peace of mind that comes from highly skilled Engineers working to keep them safe and protected from risk.

That’s where our Marlowe Academy comes in.

Being part of Marlowe Fire & Security Group gives all our valued Engineers access to a huge training and development programme at Marlowe Academy.

From bespoke training through to specialist packages, every Engineer has the opportunity to develop and progress.

Today we meet Marlowe Academy alumni, Harley Page, a Service Engineer at Marlowe Fire & Security, to learn about how the Academy benefits him in his daily role.

Tell us about your career history within the Fire & Security industry.

I’ve been a Service Engineer at Marlowe Fire & Security for just over five years now. I started life as a National Engineer at FSE, a business that was acquired by Marlowe PLC and then integrated into Marlowe Fire & Security, so I transferred over and am now Service Engineer in and around the South Yorkshire area.

How have you’ve benefitted from the Marlowe Academy?

After spending many years in the industry, every single day prepares me for the tasks and challenges I face every day in this role. However, the formal learning that the Marlowe Academy provides has helped me with the more unusual technical faults and upskilled me so I’m able to tackle a far more complex range of projects with confidence.

      Which courses have you attended?

Advanced MXPro Basic and Enhanced, Ziton ZP3 Advanced, Gent Vigilon Basic, IP CCTV and the smoke machines training. I’m also about to take the SPA/UKPIA Petrol Forecourt training.

      What did you learn?

A wide variety of technical skills from how to alter output groups on the Advanced software to understanding the mechanics of how a smoke machine operates upon activation.

How has this helped you to improve your skills?

Not only has each course given me skills in specific areas, but it’s also given me a level of knowledge to then self-teach, which makes me more self-reliant and improves my confidence as an Engineer.

How has this better equipped you for your role at MFS?

It’s broadened my skill set which helps me be more of an effective Engineer.

      What’s brilliant about the Academy?

Everything! The in-house training is free and anyone in the company can benefit. It’s a great opportunity to invest in yourself with the help and encouragement of the business.

If there is any element of my work that I’d like to learn more about or if I want to up-skill so I can work across more systems, I know the training will be available and guaranteed. As ex-engineers themselves, the trainers, Luke and Stephen, are very knowledgeable and brilliant at making the courses engaging and the learning process stress-free.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining MFS?

I’d highly recommend joining Marlowe Fire & Security. Even though it’s one of the biggest companies in the UK specialising in the fields of fire and security, it still has that close-knit, family feel.

Every single engineer has the opportunity to develop and progress throughout the company. The sky’s the limit to what you can achieve at Marlowe!

We’ve learned that happy Engineers who feel valued and invested in tend to stick around and develop their careers here. Not only do they thrive in their role as an Engineer, they also develop through the business, moving into senior positions and that drives loyalty. From this we get the peace of mind that our investment in Engineer training means we continue to deliver on our mission of keeping people and property safe.

Choose our Engineers. Choose our expertise. Choose Marlowe Fire & Security.

If you’re on the look out for your next career move and are keen to join a team that continually invests in its people and nurtures and develops their talent, it’s time to talk to us.
